How are YOU Feeling Today?

<div>The other day in my weekly text, I posed a challenge to you to let go of a “rule”. In my home we eat dinner with no TV (Pause: no parent shaming here - if watching TV works for you, no need to feel guilty!) I decided to put on a show that my family enjoys watching together during dinner time - with no shame.<br><br>I wanted to bring this conversation here so we can really de-shame and rally around this idea together.<br><br>Key idea: Our parenting isn’t defined by a single moment. It’s not defined by the time we give our child an m&amp;m for putting their shoes on or when we let them have an extra hour of screen time before bed.<br><br>So tell me in the comments below, what is something you can let go of today? He also loves all sorts of things including those that are "conventionally" considered "girly" (pink, unicorns, jewellery, etc.). We don't gender-label toys and interests in our home.<br><br>He picked out a jewellery-making kit for his birthday, made a super cool necklace, and has been wearing it to school. He just told me this morning that another boy told him that "necklaces are for girls, not boys". <br><br>I reacted in the exact opposite way that I should have (getting upset and giving him scripts, and saying I'm going to talk to his teacher, etc 😬)<br><br>It totally triggered my mama bear feelings! <br><br>[Background info: my husband and I were both bullied and excluded in school and had originally hoped to homeschool but decided not to. This is my son's first year of school and unfortunately, there have been many issues that have triggered my mama bear feelings].<br><br>So my question is: how can I prepare to discuss bullying, gender norms, how I reacted, etc. when he gets home from school? I would also love some children's book recommendations on the subjects if anyone has suggestions. </div>

She criticizes my kids behavior, weight, clothing choices, eating habits,….<br>I’m feeling guilty that I extended the invitation ( out of a sense of obligation), and didn’t instead stand firmly in protecting my kids, especially my 10 year old who is the most deeply effected by my mom’s hurtful comments.<br>I would really appreciate support and guidance in navigating this complicated situation that is causing me stress right now, instead of joy in preparation for a holiday that should be joyful and meaningful.<br><br><br></div>

Holiday Family Drama

<div>My heart broke when my 6y old girl who has the most amazing red hair cried saying she doesn't look good with red hair and would prefer to have them brown just like mine. I hugged her and asked who told her she doesn't look good with them. We truly get stopped by stranger that feel the need to tell us she has the best color ever (it's not true red but more coppery brown/blond). Then I told her that when she is older she can color them if she truly doesn't like them but also that her hair color is so unique everybody can recognize her from far away and that is very special.<br><br>Please, how can I help her not only accept this but also understand how truly beautiful she is? And most importantly that she should not let other tell her how she should feel with her own body.<br><br>I'm deeply worried this is just the tip of the iceberg. I know a lot of red haired people get bullied as kids and this worries me so much. She is such a precious little girl with the most amazing and sparkling personality. I don't want something or someone to break her.<br><br>If you have videos, scripts or books I could read that would be much appreciated.<br><br>TiA</div>

<div>First and foremost, apologies for a novel of a post!<br><br>I have been struggling with my MIL. A bit of context- my MIL moved in with us very suddenly and unexpectedly almost two years ago. Prior to this, we had a very close relationship - I considered her a trusted confidant and enjoyed her company. Unfortunately, after she moved in, a LOT of the issues I had observed from a distance came front and center - codependency with her daughters, consistently parentifying and manipulating my partner, non-compliance with doctor recommendations to manage her health, and lack of boundaries/consideration for those she lives with. Add in that we were three adults in a 900 square feet apartment, and things were tense to say the least.<br><br>I got pregnant shortly after my MIL moved in. I think we both had preconceived notions of how my pregnancy, birth, and postpartum would go. Because of the experience she has had with her daughters, she expected to be 1000% involved in the pregnancy up to being in the room during delivery, and to have unlimited access to our baby however and whenever she saw fit. I expected that she would give me space as an anxious new mom-to-be, respect the boundaries we set, be open to help us in other ways post-baby such as cooking or helping around the house, and to watch baby occasionally but also with clear boundaries (for example not leaving her unattended on the bed or not watching TV all the time). Spoiler alert- neither of our expectations have been met! 🫠<br><br>While we’re in a house now with somewhat separate spaces (thank goodness!) any attempt at setting even small boundaries has been met with denial, passive aggressiveness, or gaslighting. This is the case when I lead the conversation or when my partner has conversations with her after he and I discuss non-negotiables. Unfortunately, her moving out is not an option for the foreseeable future. I am actively working with my therapist on focusing on what I can control and prioritizing my daughter and myself. But, after solo travel with baby for a week and then all of us being sick for a week, I’m noticing that I’m feeling really off center and therefore my usual tools, ignoring, and breathing through the seemingly never ending frustrations just aren’t working. <br><br>I would love to know - how do you manage the relationship with in-laws, especially if they live with or live close to you? How do you set boundaries with people who have never had boundaries set with them? How do I not pull my hair out while dealing with this and trying to raise a whole baby? How do I ensure that my daughter does not see all this and think that her parents are allowed to behave and treat her this way?</div>
